Newport boasts the most intact surviving medieval pottery kiln in the UK. It can be seen as part of an engaging exhibition that’s accessed down the side of the Memorial Hall, which gives a thorough overview of the pottery-making process as well as a look at the wider society of medieval Newport.

Newport’s beach is a wide flat stretch of sand backed by grassy dunes, a couple of miles out of town to the north. It’s overlooked by the towering mass of the large hill Carn Ingli, and is the last point of vehicular access to the eastbound coast path until Ceibwr Bay, some seven miles away. At the beach’s east end, the Caffi Mawr is a convenient spot to grab an ice cream.

On your way to the beach from town, make a quick stop at the Neolithic burial chamber of Carreg Coetan, which is found in a small field near holiday cottages, signposted from the road. It’s impressive to see how the lower stones continue to support the large, tilting boulder on top, some 5,000 years after it was erected.
